I guess my Drobo isn’t coming today :(

After getting the runaround with both UPS and Amazon.com, apparently my Drobo and hard drives aren’t coming today.  One package Amazon says UPS picked up, UPS says they don’t have a record of it (fun, fun).  The other package, the trailer was late coming into the local distribution center so it probably won’t make it until tomorrow.

So, looks like it will be another day or two before I get the Drobo and can start playing with it.  Good thing I still have some hard drive space left to record my TV shows! :)

My Drobo is coming today!

I ordered a Drobo yesterday from Amazon.com, along with 4 Seagate 1.5 Terrabyte hard drives to go in it. All the items are scheduled to arrive today, so I’m both excited and happy, since I’m rapidly running out of hard drive space here.  I’ll post more later about my setup here at home so you’ll understand why I’m burning through disk space so quickly.

I’m a tad concerned about the hard drives due to a lot of negative reviews on Amazon.com, but from what I can tell there is a new firmware out for them to fix the issues of those drives that have problems.  It sounds like drives that were newer in terms of manufacturing haven’t had the issues.  Unfortunately, those drives were the only 1.5TB drives I could find.

Once I get the Drobo up and running and use it for a bit, I’ll post a review.  Anyone else out there using a Drobo?

So what’s this all about?

You might be wondering what this blog is all about.  The name “Twist: on Tech” applies in a couple of different ways:

  1. My nickname/handle/nom-de-guerre is “sirtwist” and has been since somewhere around 1991 when I first read the Shadowrun: Secrets of Power trilogy by Robert N. Charrette.  One of the character’s “street name” is Twist and an elf named Dodger dubbed him “Sir Twist”, complete with a British accent.
  2. This blog will be dedicated to my take on technology issues … my “twist”, if you will.  I’ll be talking about things like gadgets, media technology, cloud computing, gaming and internet security.  Sometimes I’ll be writing reviews of products and/or services.  Other times I’ll be rambling (hopefully coherently) about various “geeky” things I’ve been working on.  I’ll likely even chat about things I find in the tech press and other blogs.

Since this is my first adventure in blogging, with the exception of corporate blogs such as our Purity Networks Blog, I ask you to bear with me as I search for the right balance of personal commentary, news and other assorted tidbits.  I’m definitely open to suggestions, so feel free to email me at sirtwist@twistontech.com.

Hope you enjoy the site!
